Associate Professor

Radiation Oncology

University of Washington / Fred Hutch Cancer Center

Dr. Gillespie has advanced training in implementation science, behavioral economics, and clinical trial design. Her research program focuses on pragmatic clinical trials to establish the effectiveness of new therapies and the development of strategies to improve access to evidence-based cancer care.

Current Projects

Research themes and currently open studies:

  • Radiation therapy (RT) to prevent skeletal-related events for asymptomatic bone metastases
  • Strategies to promote clinical trial enrollment
  • Digital health (including ePROs, activity monitors, virtual care) to improve access to symptom management
    • PRO-ACTIVE is a prospective observational pilot trial. Check out the Study Brochure
  • Strategies to promote high quality RT across Washington State
    • WA ROQS (Radiation Oncology Quality Study) is a mixed methods study using public and private claims matched to registry data combined with surveys and qualitative interviews of clinicians and clinical practice sites
  • Contouring education
    • eContour (http://econtour.org/) is a free interactive educational website and clinical decision support tool for radiation treatment planning that is in use by >45,000 radiation oncology professionals in >150 countries

Medical Student Research Fellowship

The University of Washington Department of Radiation Oncology welcomes rotating medical students and has a medical student research fellowship. One month in person and two week virtual clerkships are available as well.

We welcome students both from the University of Washington and other schools of medicine. In the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic we are not offering in person visiting clerkships, but virtual clerkships are available.
